What is CIPP?
CIPP (Cured in Place Pipe) is a trenchless rehabilitation method used to repair existing pipelines, such as sanitary sewers, storm sewers, and force mains. CIPP utilizes a jointless, seamless, corrosion-resistant lining made of non-woven polyester felt to repair old, leaky, cracked, or structurally unsound pipelines.
Why CIPP?
CIPP is a widely used method in trenchless technology and a fast growing market. It has many benefits over the traditional "dig and replace" method. Here are a handful:
- It restores the structural integrity to damaged sewer pipes
- The absence of joints and seams improves flow capacity
- The smooth interior provides abrasion resistance
- It's less expensive and more eco-friendly, as it does not require excavation
- Installation is flexible - the lining can be inverted or pulled into place using air or water, and cured using steam or hot water
- The CIPP process can be completed in one day, versus 6-9 months for traditional pipe replacement
- CIPP has a 50+ year design life
The CIPP Process

Before
Before CIPP relining, the pipeline must be cleaned by jetting to remove corrosion and debris. Lateral connections must be closed, and protruding connections (that may interfere with the lining) removed. Our Puma Intelligent Hydraulic Root Cutter and Diamond Tap Cutter are perfect for this job.

During
The pipes are typically accessed through manholes. View all our manhole extraction equipment here. The lining is pulled into place using air or water, and once in place is cured using steam or hot water.
After
After CIPP is complete, the lateral connections must be opened. Our Hydraulic Root Cutter and Diamond Tap Cutter will, again, take care of business.
Southland Tool also provides products for post-CIPP maintenance. Our 6-Wire Proofer Skid is coated to ensure a clear and pristine pipe - without damaging the lining. In fact, any of our nozzle extensions, proofers, and cleaning tools can be coated with a special fusion bonded epoxy to protect the newly placed liner from damage by the cleaning tools.
And to remove those CIPP linings that no longer work, use our Carbide Toothed Concave Saw.
